The ”Kidz Corp Program”

An after-school program located at the Salvation Army and in collaboration with the  Shelby County Counseling Center and the Sidney-Shelby Co. YMCA that offers social programming and homework assistance for elementary and middle school students Monday thru Friday. Youth are able to learn and play in 2 computer labs, 2 class rooms, a teen lounge, a game room, and a gymnasium. The program was in response to the 2013 Community Wide Needs Assessment and is an extension of the Salvation Army’s “Kidz Corp. Program.”

Imagination Library is an early literacy program for children under the age of 5. At no cost to the family, an age appropriate book is mailed monthly to the family’s address. Studies show children enrolled in Imagination Library are better prepared for kindergarten, are read to more often, and have more books and visits to the local libraries than children not enrolled. This program is supported locally by the Shelby County United Way, Shelby County Libraries, Sidney City Schools, Midwest Regional ESC, Sidney Altrusa, Kiwanis, Rotary, POWER, Monarch Legacy Fund and Wilson Health.

Character Playbook

Character Playbook is an innovative digital course that uses evidence-based strategies to educate students on how to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships during their critical middle school years. Built by EverFi, Character Playbook is comprised of six modules that cover key concepts of positive character development, social-emotional learning (SEL), and building healthy relationships. This course will allow students to engage with true-to-life scenarios that include bystander intervention strategies and positive relationship examples. The course aligns with National Health Education Standards, CASEL Social and Emotional Learning Competencies, and Common Core Standards. Course Module Topic Areas include: Analyzing Influences, Understanding and Managing Emotions, Communicating Effectively, Resolving Conflicts, Stepping In, and Making Decisions. The curriculum is currently offered in 7 local middle school districts.
